ABC: 32 Cat 2 - BOC: 41 (S), 3 (B) - A BOC Certified Orthotic Fitter is a professional who is competent in fitting prefabricated, head to toe orthoses, including neck, back, arm, knee, ankle and foot braces. This 40-hour BOC Approved course consists of an online and a live component, and is approved by BOC for their Certified Orthotic Fitter Board Examination.

How it works:

CFS has worked with the Board of Certification/Accreditation (BOC)to offer a 100% online Orthotic Fitter Course to the healthcare community. This class is 100% online, with NO TRAVEL.

Part I of the Orthotic Fitter Course is completed self-paced online via Distance Learning. This portion of the course consists of narrated PowerPoint lectures, printable lecture notes, lab assignments, study activities and self-assessments. Successful completion of all lab assignments is required for attendance of the live portion of the class. This portion of the class is estimated to take between 16 - 24 hours to complete, depending on how quickly the student works. The average time per module is 50 minutes.

Part II of the Orthotic Fitter Course is completed during a live, instructor led, web-based session that spans two eight-hour days, via the ZOOM video conferencing application. This portion of the course consists of completion of various lab assignments, demonstrated by the instructor and reproduced by the students using a mock patient at their location.

Many devices, both contemporary and historical, will be discussed. However, students will only be responsible for fitting an abbreviated set of braces (basic set). Students are solely responsible for obtaining a basic set of braces and tools and to have a mock patient (family member, friend, coworker) available both days.  A desktop, laptop or cell phone is required. Free application download is required. The student is not limited to any one brand or specific styling in order to foster diversity in devices. This will potentially expose the other students to devices and fitting techniques they may not otherwise be familiar with. The basic set of recommended braces and tools may be new or used, and are outlined below:

(1) Pair Therapeutic Shoes to fit Mock Patient

(1) Pair Heat Moldable Diabetic Insoles

(1) Heat Gun

Each student will be assessed on indications/contraindications for the device, successful identification of pertinent landmarks, successful donning of the device, instructing the mock patient in donning, doffing and care of the device, and troubleshooting fit. Successful completion of all lab assignments is required for eligibility to take the final exam. Successful completion of the final exam with a score of 70% or greater is required for successful completion of the course and certificate award. This portion of the class is estimated to take 16 hours (2 days 8am-5pm CST) to complete.

Once the student signs up for this class, they will be given some tentative class dates to choose from.  We are limiting the video conference to 6 students at a time. (If all the students are at the same location, this number may vary. )
